It’s dumb, but doesn’t try to beat you over the head with its simplicity like Duke Nukem Forever. There is also an extra amount of story than is per the norm for Serious Sam, with talking heads exchanging corny jokes and one-liners throughout. Curiously, an option for 1920×1080 resolution does not currently exist in the options, and must instead be programmed manually. Enemies range from small and insignificant to massively taking up several screens at once, and even with a combination of the two the game never hitches in the framerate, thanks to the simplistic but effective Monty-Python-like parallax that virtually stitches characters and backgrounds together. As an alternative to FPS controls, it works just fine, but it can oftentimes be difficult to make out which way the target reticule is aiming at when the screen is practically bursting with exploding enemies, exploding grenades, and pretty much everything else that explodes. Speaking of shooting, Double D goes for a Contra-style system of aiming, though heavily modified to allow precise aiming in every single direction while also being able to move and shoot at the same time. Want to have a tower of tommyguns, or a stack consisting of rocket launchers, lasers, and grenades? Perhaps an all-chainsaw combination with a flamethrower on top, just for kicks? There’s no real strategic element to any of the combinations, just stick with whatever looks cool and burn through that ammunition. By collecting the necessary components, Sam can stack one gun on top of another, allowing simultaneous fire and extra damage, with up to six guns capable of being stacked at one time, in any combination so desired. Regardless, there’s no denying that the action is as exhausting and head-banging as it ever was, and the guns are just as deadly…or deadlier in fact, thanks to the new Gun Stacker mechanic. While the shift to 2D offers a slight advantage in seeing which direction enemies will be teleporting from, Double D is no less frugal in bombarding you with things to kill than its 3D predecessors Baddies have a habit of teleporting out of thin air to attack Sam, and in addition to series mainstays like the ocular Gnarrs or the screaming Suicide Bombers, a new host of oddball opponents have been created for this game, and many seem like some fourth grader’s heavy-metal inspired fantasy you’ve got monkeys on jetpacks throwing banana grenades, dinosaurs outfitted with lasers and rockets, caterpillars wearing berets and wielding automatic weapons, and living pancakes that explode on impact and bleed syrup.ĭepending how you react to any of the enemy descriptions above, this is either the most awesome game you’ve ever heard of, or the stupidest. It takes an Indie developer to make an Indie 2D platformer, so Croteam has hired Mommy’s Best Games to handle Sam’s not-so-serious transition from First Person Shooter to 2D Side Scroller, a move that has been handled almost seamlessly everything that has made the Serious Sam series stay relevant has been reproduced faithfully here, including the most important feature: mowing down endless legions of enemies with highly destructive weapons. With Duke Nukem’s long-awaited return alongside the desire to see him disappear forever, the onus stands on Serious Sam’s broad shoulders to soldier on the spirit of the 90’s with his bullet-soaking series in the upcoming release of Serious Sam 3: BFE. Back then, the FPS genre cared less about realistic cinematics and more about providing an adrenaline rush that no energy drink could replicate (they didn’t exist at the time, after all). Rather, the statement better applies to the style of FPS games as they were known in the 90’s: long stretches of corridors filled with thousands of enemies and thousands more of ammunition to mow them down. For mainstream shooters like Call of Duty or Halo, the market is as thriving as ever. It would seem absurd to proclaim that FPS games are a dying breed, considering it’s nearly impossible to go one month without one of those games getting released. ![]() Jean has been featured on the Forbes Midas List and was previously a member of the Scientific Advisory Board for the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center. While that may not sound like a big deal, and it probably isn't, I am surprised that their QC is not better on something costing nearly five figures. I will say, that my McIntosh amp arrived with one of the big blue meters malfunctioning. I am still in the honeymoon stage with my McIntosh amp, so I will reserve final judgement until I have had a few months to let the new romance settle in. The McIntosh does have a bit of noise and if I did not have the Benchmarks to compare it to, I would probably never notice. I do not need to do that with the McIntosh because it sounds satisfying at any level. With the Benchmark amps, I found myself turning up the volume to get better sound. I can listen longer, without fatigue, and music sounds good at any listening level. The McIntosh amp, on the other hand, sounds effortless, smooth and presents a much deeper and layered soundstage. I never realized how flat that plane was until I started listening through the McIntosh. The soundstage is wide and the vocals and instruments are easily picked out in various locations across a single plane. The background on the Benchmark amps disappears into infinity and they are much more dynamic. They are easily the cleaner and more transparent sounding of the two brands. I have been listening to a pair of AHB2s for several years and am very familiar and comfortable with how they sound. It is mated to a McIntosh C2700 preamp and feeding a pair of GoldenEar Triton One speakers matched with a pair of SVS SB 16 Ultras. I have had the MC462 in my system for a few weeks now and am very much enjoying it. And thinking about ordering a pair of W371. I ordered the 8361s and now waiting for them for the past 2 months. Not sure what I was thinking, but looking at the resale value of the Sabrina + MC462 + AHB2, I thought I could replace them by a pair of Genelec 8361 AND a pair of W371. The footprint and look is better in my opinion, but there is less I/O compared to the C52. I am also selling my very nice C52 that I replaced by the HPA4 and DAC3. Despite I loved the big blue meters, I think I prefer the austerity and the form factor of the AHB2. For over a month, I juggled with this first world problem and decided to sell the MC462. I ended looking at my amps, not knowing what to do, to choose between the McIntosh or the Benchmark. Listening to Nine Inch Nails - We're in this together at this level was incredible. The MC462 power needles were oscillating past the 450W mark. But believe me, it was at VERY high volume, absolutely not regular playing volume. We switch to the MC462 and I could raise the volume higher. At some point, the AHB2 were clipping (leds turning red), but the sound was still good. The only difference was when we turned up the volume to ridiculous volume. I believe that the McIntosh sound signature comes from the valve amps and preamps, not modern power amps. My conclusion is that, on 8 ohms binding post, we couldn't hear a difference between the two brands, no differences in any frequencies ( Sound). I googled about this observation and found some people who were experiencing the same behaviour : better control on 8 ohm posts.Īfter some track tests, on which we preferred the AHB2's, I switched to the 8 ohms connectors and suddenly, the basses were as tight as the AHB2's. I read, in a Stereophile article about the Wilson's Sasha DAW, that the MC462 8 ohm posts were twice the DF of the 4's and that the reviewer preferred the 8 ohms, even if the Sasha's are rated at 4 ohms (same as my Sabrina's). Some weeks after my initial post, I re-tested the dual AHB2 and the MC462 with some friends, after a read something about McIntosh binding posts. ![]() Other differences : 462 is freaking heavy compared to the Benchmark and the big VU meters are nice, but a bit ostentatious.Īll the tests have been made using the same preamp (Benchmark HPA4).Īs mentioned by someone today in another thread, we should not hear a difference, but I believe there’s some. To my ears, the 462 seems to show more low frequencies, but is it because it lacks higher frequencies or because it doesn’t control well the woofer? With a friend, we tried to understand why and the only thing that come in mind was the damping factor difference. We also had the feeling that the low frequencies are not well controlled with the 462, maybe a bit sloppy. The sound stage seems also a bit more defined. The high frequencies seems crispier and the voices, mainly woman voices, are more in your face (or more natural) with the AHB2. My conclusion (also heard by some friends and family) is that the AHB2s are more revealing. I felt I needed to challenge the 462, and I like to screw around… Last month, I got a pair of AHB2, and couldn’t resist to match them with the HPA4. I own a MC462 for about 3 years, matched with it’s C52. ![]() You may install and use an unlimited number of copies of a Tension Type Free Font. ![]() This Tension Type Free Font is free to use in any and all of your personal and commercial work.Ī donation is much appreciated, but not necessary (donations may be done through PayPal to: No donation is too small. One of the very funniest songs on the playlist is “You’re So Vain” – which is overplayed (I seem to encounter it every time I’m at the grocery store) and thus not fully appreciated for its sly, rueful humor. Scientists say that listening to music of your youth activates dormant neural pathways. The only thing keeping me sane while I dig in the clay is my “70s Fun” playlist. I am hating this project and think wistfully of the cool darkness of the garage where my queue of typewriters sit. It is slow, hot work in the heat of the Virginia summer – the red Virginia clay is like cement: Now that the pipe has been replaced, it is my job to go out and re-seat the sod. Fortunately my husband and I got the new pipe in before the Deluge of the Century – three to four inches fell in just an hour. What could the obstruction be? Tree roots, pipe collapse, small garden gnome? We pulled the old pipe out and discovered that it had silted up – the old pipe was perforated and had no protective sock. The sump drain pipe wasn’t flowing as it should, and we had problems snaking it. Which brings me to another project I have been working on with my husband: replacing about 50 feet of sump drainage pipe that had silted up. I want to look deep into Underwood’s heart and see if I can understand him any better. People who tinker with typewriters dislike working on Underwood portables of this era. Lurking in the Facebook Antique Typewriter Maintenance Group I have come to find that I am not alone in thinking this. Would that Underwood had made their portables as easy to work on as their standards. ![]() Would that all typewriters were like old Underwood standards. They had well-documented guides, accessible innards, wide open spaces. The old Underwood standards I have worked on have been true joy. Well, unfortunately I can’t find a service manual for a 1950s Underwood portable. Someone else might decide at this point to remove the carriage, but there’s no flippin’ way I am taking off that carriage. The platen screw needs a 4-spline Bristol wrench – which I don’t have: I thought, well, let’s pop out the platen and see if I can see anything underneath the platen. I longed for a Royal or Smith-Corona portable set-up where everything hangs out: Everything was hidden behind an interior frame. Even with all the body panels off, I could not see the escapement. I thought that his sliding carriage issues were related to a dirty/gummy escapement which I’ve seen before, so I patiently cleaned and cleaned and cleaned. He was very dirty-which I find provocative in a typewriter. When I first brought him home, I took the Underwood out to workshop and stripped him down. I was spending too much time trying to make him behave, but I think I’m over him. He’s full of secrets, requiring special tools and super-human patience and abilities to unlock him. This Underwood portable is a handsome bad boyfriend: easy on the eyes, but difficult in all sorts of aggravating ways. I was looking for a long-term relationship, but this Underwood just can’t stay in one place. I picked up this bad boy at Herman’s last jamboree (you meet all sorts) and brought him home.
